Osteopathic Visceral Manipulation
Osteopathy philosophy revolves around four basic tenants. One of these is the philosophies is that the “body is a functional unit”. Simply explained everything has the capacity to affect everything in the body, therefore, structures like joints, muscles and ligaments are linked to the viscera. Meaning if the health and mobility of one is affected it has the ability to impact the other.
Osteopathy links motion to health. If motion is affected the physiological performance of the viscera or the tissues surrounding it may be affected. Generally speaking, healthy viscera display mobility and motility. Mobility meaning can it move freely relative to surrounding muscle or other viscera and does the viscera move effectively with global body movements like walking, running and breathing. Motility is an inherent motion of the organ and is a memory of the spiraling movements that occur during embryological development.
WHAT CAN AFFECT VISCERAL MOBILITY?
Inflammation from food sensitivities, constipation, etc
Trauma- physical and emotional
Motor vehicle accidents
Surgeries
Fascial restrictions
Visceral manipulation helps to restore the mobility and motility of the viscera to help improve viscera function as well as to help improve health both regionally and globally in the body
